Context Sensitive Music Empty Context Sensitive Music

Post by bladevalant546 Thu May 16, 2013 3:48 am

Music is by far one of the largest contributing factors to the overall Mood of a game. Now I am not sure on the limitations of the Homeworld engine’s ability to modify. However, if possible I think it would be a good idea to input context sensitive music. I am not sure if Homeworld does this to a degree, however a very famous RTS Total Annihilation does this. What this means basically based on what is happening in the game is what kind of music start playing. I cannot pinpoint of complex already does this but for the sake of the suggestion let us assume it does not.

Functionality- How this would behave in game would be based on what events are going on in the game IE: Building, Battling, and condition during the battle dictate what kind of music is played. This might seem like a small factor concerning this, however the immersion factor is greatly improved and even moral of and tempo of a battle shifts. I be willing to research on proper programming regarding this to help. I for one want to throw this often over looked section of a game. Imagine a scene where you are losing a battle it will play the correct music. I can also for help and reference look at the Total Annhilation code to get an idea of how it can be modded and adapted. Thanks in advanced.

Good idea, presented too early in the development cycle. Later in this would be great to add.

Oh yea, it is kinda early however I wanted to get the seed planted. I am currently working with Anubis on some brainstorming improvements after playing the latest complex mod.

Once the modular code core is in, you want to write a module, go for it

We should get the soundtracks started after the next release. Need a team member specializing in that.

Imo, most of the ambient sounds suck. They ether are boring or do not add anything "cool" to the current game state.
Also: Some tracks cut off whilst they're not even done yet. I find it highly unsatisfying to have some songs cut off mid way or when the most epic part is coming up.

Just sayin', though.

I'm surprised no-one has noticed that the Complex music system does this. I used to use N to switch to the next track all the time before the Player interface was added - battle music would almost NEVER play unless there was an actual battle occurring. In which case, the music basically called itself into action.

Then again, this could be expanded upon greatly. Good idea.

@Farcrada; I'll agree on some of these tracks, but I especially like some of the songs from Inception, Transformers, and some of the other "special" tracks. Those are great.

We'll have to compile a list from people's suggestions, I think.

It would be very nice to replace the ambient tracks with something more moving for 8.6 or it's patches.

Yes. A good choice of audio would give an instant contrast to vanilla Complex.
