Sweepers replacement •• PurpleKalamar
Lots of people agree that the sweepers do not fit the Hiigaran fleet very well, due to their tendency to be inaccurate and to flood the map with cluster bursts. So I come up with this idea: replacing them by this:
It's an autogun, so it's basically the same purpose, by it's more accurate and doesn't fire like a flak gun, but more like a heavy hull defense gun. This would the tier 1-2 hull defense system, while the pulsar turret could be the tier 2-3 hull defense system. Thoughts?
By the way, it shouldn't be too long to texture.

Uh, frigates work well, they just need a buff. AoE weaponry is the most logical way to fight masses of strike craft. Your turret however does seem to be higher quality than the sweeper turrets used.

I didn't say that flak frigates should be removed, I agree that their AoE guns work like a charm against fighters, but this is actually my point: in the current CE, why would you build flak frigates when you can build 3 sweepers on a Carrier? I think hull defense guns should be less efficient against strike craft, and have more penetration against frigates, just enough to be a threat. But indeed, the Flak shouldn't be removed whatsoever! Also, if Flak frigates were to be the only vessel to carry very specialized flak weapons, it would make them more unique and, I think, more worth your while building them.
At last, I wouldn't mind, ofc, if my models are merely used as replacement for the current sweeper model.

Well I'm not against anything that doesn't affect balance matters really. This is a design decision, so it would be great if the others posted too!
Anyway, just sweepers on a carrier don't remove the threat of strike craft, it's just a small defensive measure to buy time for reinforcements to arrive. These turrets don't make frigates redundant by any means.
In short, having the capital class anti-fighter weapon designs in the game doesn't zone out specialist ships.

the problem with sweeper turrets, is that 2 destroyers due to the way aoe works, are enough to stop an infinite number of fighters, sweeper turrets are nice, but I rather have a very high rof single target turret that is very effective at taking fighters, but 1 at the time (just many times in a short amount of time) than disappearing whole squadrons due to stacked AOE.

Agreed. That's exactly what I meant by 'autogun'

Would it be okay if this fired the rounds of a gunship covette? Visually speaking, that is.

Yes, it would do the job perfectly, I think. Perhaps they would just need to be slightly scaled up?

The turret is a nice job. Definitely better than the sweeper turret.
I agree with Naka, in that the change ought not to affect overall balance.
